An AFC South showdown for the ages it is not! The Tennessee Titans, losers of seven of their past eight games travel to Indianapolis to take on a resurgent Colts team that is finally on the cusp of their ninth straight post season appearance. The Titans have nothing to gain in Sunday’s contest while the Colts have excess motivation ahead of their Sunday showdown.
The Tennessee Titans are looking to end the season strong but make no mistake about it, a few players have Monday tee times already booked. Kerry Collins will lead Tennessee’s 29th ranked passing game into Lucas Oil Stadium and Chris Johnson will guide the 16th ranked running game in their last game of the season. It is a timely death for an offense that has been schizophrenic all season long.
The Tennessee defense was strong during the Titans 5-2 start – it looked like they were ready to assume elite status once again, but a complete meltdown through the middle and end of the season has the Tennessee defense looking for answers too.
Tennessee’s 28th ranked pass defense will be no match for Indy’s Top ranked passing offense and the 21st ranked run defense will have a difficult time slowing a Colts running game that has found new life and has averaged 173 yards in the last two games.
Coach Jeff Fisher, in possibly his last game as Tennessee coach has stated that he will use Sunday’s game to get a look at some of his young talent. That’s right – it will be a lot of backups playing against a fired up Colts squad!
The Indianapolis Colts are currently on a three game win streak and they need just one more in order to qualify for the post season. Peyton Manning has gotten over his slump, the Colts have discovered a running game and the run defense has actually started to make some stops – a good sign for the playoff bound Colts.
The Colts’ #1 passing game will do whatever it wants in this game but it is likely to be the emerging running game (30th ranked – 92.13 yards per game) that may just steal the show! The running game has averaged 173 yards in the last two games and has a veteran Dominic Rhodes running like he’s 10 years younger and a finally healthy Joseph Addai to lean on.
Defensively, Indianapolis will hold its own in the passing game but on the ground is where this team has witnessed a drastic turn around! In the last two games, against Top four rushing offenses, Indy’s 27th ranked run defense (132.07 yards per game) has allowed an average of just 73.5 yards per game on the ground.
